Vacation in Lanzarote, The Canary Islands, July 2014

Hello everyone !! I am loving this whole writing and tale telling activity. In this post, I will take you through our holiday in Lanzarote which is one of the 17 islands of Spanish Canary Islands.Lanzarote is an active volcano (technically) and is in fact a result of the volcanic activity. I have always wanted to visit the Canaries for all that I had heard and read about it and I jumped at the chance to visit it once Manish was able to take a week off for a holiday.
We bought 5 days holiday deal online and took a flight from Frankfurt airport to Arrecife airport which is one of the municipalities in Lanzarote. We picked up our rental car from the pick up point at Airport and zoom we drove off. Manish and I both love to drive and I feel the best way to see a place is to drive through it on your own instead of hiring a taxi, plus it just gives so much more flexibility. This place people is absolutely, jaw-dropping, amazingly gorgeous. The drive towards our resort in Playa Dorada was spectacular, a contrast of Black Lava volcanic mountains and in the distance the teal blue waters of Atlantic Ocean. An interesting fact about this one : Although it is in Spanish territory, it is around 1000 Km from Spanish mainland and as close as a mere 100 Km to Africa. My affinity for sea, distant remote places and isolation was all for me to be experienced for next few days. I loved the resort, Spanish Tapas bars.

Beautiful road ahead, Super excited !!

There are numerous resorts and therefore lots and lots and lots of shopping, eating and entertainment. Right in front of the resort and on this little plateau between the sea and beach road was this open-air gym ( believe me I have woken up early almost everyday to be there, see the sunrise while I peddle my way to a healthy beautiful start to the day). The first evening went into exploring the place by foot and finding out about this open-air, sea-facing gym.

Thank you Lord for waking me up to this
Isnt this gym totally awesome :D

On the second day we wanted to just chill on one of the most famous beaches in Lanzarote "Papagayo", this was  a short drive for us being on the southern extreme tip of the island. We had to pay I reckon  3 Euros as a toll tax to use this road. Lots of the beaches here are popular with nudists so please make sure that you check if that might be of point of concern. We drove into this place, parked at headland and first had some chilled beer at this cute pad before spreading ourselves in sun on the white-sand beach. After a few hours of lazying at Papagayo beach, reading and finally feeling hungry we wrapped up and were back at our resort for the evening.  Husband being particularly fond of eating Indian food no matter where on earth we go, makes it a point to find out good Indian Restaurants and ta da....we got our fill of Indian meal on this evening.

Third day and we were on ferry across the sea going for a day trip to Fuerteventura, another one of the Canary Islands, gorgeous beyond belief and a different scene cause of its white sand beaches. After loitering around the  island, we spent some time at a beach and finally settled ourselves for a sumptuous Spanish lunch. The same evening we returned on a ferry to Lanzarote. Its really a matter of choice if you wish to spend more time, you can always book a hotel for as long as you wish to stay there and then return. Lot of people who plan a long vacation and wish to experience the most, actually do Island hopping in The Canaries.

Next day we took another trip to the Island of La Graciosa. This was a guided tour so we first drove to the north tip of Lanzarote (Orzola) and were taken on a Ferry from the town of Orzola to a village where we had to change-over into the sail-boat that took us to La Graciosa. We spent an hour in this village looking around, walking through the sandy streets and along side houses painted in white and stopped by a church there. The sail boat trip was total entertainment where Paella was cooked on board for all passengers, fresh local fruits and sangria was served and after sailing in sun for a while we were brought to another golden sandy beach of Las Conchas. Most of the tourists get here to experience an un-hurried day and to snorkel or do kayaking. I was just lazying on the beach though, soaking in the views and taking a dip as and when it got too hot to bear. After a about two hours, the guide got the group together and boarded us back on sail boat. We were served with some real yum authentic Paella and amazing music, dance and entertainment on the way back. Food !! Id have to say is the most effective ice breaker for a traveler....the love for food, sharing and eating together on boat, while pleasant wind blew across the sea, Spanish tunes played, was truly a soul satiating experience.  This was the moment of pure indulgence for my nomadic soul, I was seeing the volcanic mountains, I was feeling the drops of lashing waves from deep blue waters on my skin and my fellow travelers were enthusiasts like me who perhaps were feeling blessed like I was for being there and having seen that.

On our final day in Lanzarote we took an under water submarine safari and experienced this beautiful world meters down in Atlantic Ocean. There are a lot of Submarine safaris you will see in Lanzarote, but there's only one which is conducted with all protocols and in a real submarine (Link is posted below). The safari resurfaces on water with the song "we all live in a yellow submarine" and the certificates by the company for having completed an underwater voyage are also given, Loved it !!
This was the final evening in Lanzarote. Next day we packed ourselves and headed back home.
